Alpine Mountaineering in
the San Juan Mountains
The San Juan Mountains are the largest and most rugged of all mountain
ranges in Colorado. The craggy skylines and sweeping snowfields
have inspired generations of alpinists to challenge themselves.
These peaks, ridges, and valleys are the setting of our 3-Day Basic
Alpine Mountaineering course. We begin with three days of skill
instruction that includes snow travel techniques, ice axe self belay
and arrest, crampon use, ropework, and movement over alpine terrain
of mixed rock, snow, and ice. In the final two days, we will attempt
a classic alpine mountaineering route that makes use of all techniques
practiced earlier in the program. Throughout the course, instructors
will share considerations for route selection and participants will
be involved in decision making for the team. This course prepares
participants to be competent rope team members on intermediate level
alpine climbs. Peaks that we operate on include, Mt. Sneffels (14,150),
Chimney Peak, Dallas Peak, Coxcomb, Wildhorse, and Wetterhorn Peak
(14,015). These are all San Juan Classics that range from 12,000
feet to over 14,000 feet. Previous backpacking experience is required
for course participants.
