FAQ

Q. Where is Ouray, Colorado?

A. Ouray is located in the Southwest portion of Colorado. We are approximately equidistant between Durango and Grand Junction. Driving time from either Denver, Salt Lake City, or Albuquerque are all around seven hours. The closest airport service is Montrose (MTJ) located 35 miles to our north.

Q. What is the best way for me to get from Montrose airport to Ouray?

A. Your choices are to either rent a vehicle or hire a shuttle service for the 35-mile drive. We recommend the shuttle because Ouray is very simple to navigate on foot. On your climbing days with our service, we take care of the transportation. Call (970) 325-4484 to schedule your shuttle or visit www.soajeep.com

Q. What kind of clothing and equipment do I need for a day of climbing?

A. Please refer to our equipment page.

Q. I am not a big fan of the cold. What kind of wintertime temperatures can I expect to encounter?

A. Ouray is a very dry climate with 300+ days of sunshine per year. The average winter temperature is actually slightly above freezing. As we are fond of pointing out, we are almost ice climbing in Arizona. Ice climbing weather does not get much milder than Ouray.

Q. Do you rent climbing equipment?

A. No, we do not. Climbing equipment is provided to our customers while they are climbing with our service. For rental equipment please contact Bill Leo at Ouray Mountain Sports at 970-325-4284.

Q. What else does Ouray offer as far as activities?

A. Ouray is located only 47 miles from Telluride, which offers world class lift-serviced skiing. Ouray also offers a wonderful hot springs pool, cross-country skiing, great restaurants, shopping, and a myriad of other recreational opportunities depending upon the season of your visit. Please refer to www.ouraycolorado.com for other details.

Q. Do you have any recommendations for lodging options?

A. Yes, we do. Please refer to our lodging link on our resources page.

Q. Do you offer any open registration classes?

A. Yes. We do offer Basic Ice Climbing Courses and intermediate Ice Craft Courses for ice climbing, but in general we prefer to contract our services on a case-by-case basis. This approach allows us to personalize the curriculum to meet each customers or small self-organized group's specific goals and desires. We do our best to match up customers seeking to share a guide in order to reduce their tuition costs.
